Comments:

I have been riding the same vintage race bike since 1984 and needed to upgrade as I loved my old bike but it hurt my neck and back. I rode several models of carbon and aluminum frame and had almost settled on a different carbon bike with Shimano 105. The 105 is good but the quick shifting of the Ultegra components as well as the combined comfort, stability, speed and response of this bike made up my mind. It takes off and climbs quick and is solid but smooth and forgiving as the frame and fork absorb rough roads. The geometry is very comfortable and I can ride for hours with little to no strain. The seat isn't perfect but it's pretty good. I love this bike and would get it again. As an added benefit, my son has taken to riding my vintage road bike.

Comments:

This bike is an excellent compromise between performance and comfort. Easy to ride, fast enough, very good components, quality build. Unbeatable quality for the price. I've ridden it 3000 miles, and added 85,000 vert feet. Replaced chain and tires (of course), spokes beginning to pop. I rode it in the French Alps, where everyone asked me qabout "Giant" ("Don't they make kids' bikes?"). I set them straight. One negative: most Giant dealers don't stock Giant parts for this bike, so it's hard to get OEM tires, and the spokes (straight pull) are hard to find. Also, dealers don't custom fit, as in putting on a longer stem for example. I don't like the seat post: once it's cut, it's cut and you have to get a new one from Giant if you sell the bike to a longer-legged person. But overall this bike is a superb ride for the money and I'd buy it qagain in a flash.

I was fortunate to have discoverd this wonderful LBS who took the time to help inform me and allowed me to ride many bikes and found one that i cant ride enough of. I have 6 other bikes dating back 20 years with less combined miles than my newest Defy composite. Our plan is to set my wife and son up with composite bikes from this wonderful unamed Giant dealer. Not to mention how helpful they are when it comes to accessories and there is no better service team in this town. The combined experience in this shop is second to none.

I bought this bike as an upgrade from my Flat Bar Giant Rapid. I have been amazed by the difference in performance. I have had the bike for 3 weeks and have over 350 miles on it. I ride mainly on dedicated bike routes on relatively flat ground. Now I have a perfectly good aluminum flat bar bike collecting dust.

    Comments:

As someone who is not an expert cyclist, but loves to spend hours riding for fitness and enjoyment, this bike has been a godsend. I have ridden hybrids and other bikes that were supposed to be more comfortable for my back that gives me problems occasionally. One day, the owner of my LBS suggested a carbon Defy after spending many hundreds of miles on a Rapid. After letting me spend a considerable amount of time test riding it, my son became the happy owner of a Giant Rapid, and me a very happy owner of a Defy 1 composite. I could not be happier with this bike and would highly recommend anyone giving it a consideration.
